Embracing the Future of Healthcare: Exploring Regenerative Medicine and Holistic Healing

A Personal Reflection

As the case manager at Advanced Spinal Care & Rehab, I work alongside Dr. John and our team to support patients on their wellness journeys. Today, I’m excited to share my perspective on the future of healthcare.

A few years ago, Smile Direct Club revolutionized teledentistry with its low-cost alternatives to braces. Recently, I learned about the company’s bankruptcy filing and the emergence of many potential issues with DIY aligners. The news made me somewhat nervous, given the aligner I was wearing from a similar company.

“This thing on my teeth is an experiment!” I realized. Then I thought about all the health-related products and services we’ve believed in the past were helpful that turned out to be anything but. Can you believe we used to spray DDT on ourselves as mosquito repellent, or that women used to be prescribed birth-defect-producing thalidomide for morning sickness? I imagine that in the future, we’ll look back at many of the things we’re doing now and perceive them as barbaric.

Exploring what makes us healthy is a journey, and the only thing we are certain of is that the science of it is never truly settled.

That said, we aren’t totally floundering in the Dark Ages. If we look at examples like DDT spraying and thalidomide, and even the aligners, what do they have in common? They all attempt to attain a result with a shortcut, addressing symptoms rather than trying to create health from the ground up.

Embracing Regenerative Medicine: A Paradigm Shift

This is one of the reasons why I got so excited about regenerative medicine when I first heard about it. It’s been around long enough to go through many refinements and evolutions, and it’s stood the test of years of treatments given to people for whom nothing else worked. In the US, it’s been growing particularly as a viable alternative to surgery in cases of osteoarthritis, in many cases keeping the amputation and replacement of joints as a last resort.

What makes it so exciting? Short recovery times, as opposed to months spent recuperating after a joint replacement. Most patients report feeling improvement right away, and the treatments have few to no side effects. Studies estimate that 20-30% of people have ongoing pain and discomfort after a knee replacement, and many will never feel “normal” again. If you’re regrowing cartilage, your knee remains your own beloved knee. Surgery, on the other hand, carries risks of infection, blood clots, and heart trouble from the stress. All of these are avoided with regenerative medicine.

Addressing the Cost Conundrum

The big downside to regenerative medicine is that insurance doesn’t usually cover it. However, if you calculate the cost of a joint replacement, it often turns out to be similar or greater. We can add up the out-of-pocket costs of surgery and additional medical visits, lost income from missing work, and the possibility of a second surgery after the prosthetic joint reaches its lifespan. That’s not even factoring in the intangible costs like lost productivity, decreased quality of life, and the emotional toll of dealing with an insurance company that’s trying its hardest to not pay anything.

Committing to Well-Being

Our bodies possess remarkable healing abilities. We just need to facilitate them and basically get out of our own way. Instead of relying on synthetic substances to mimic natural functions, regenerative medicine seeks to optimize our body’s inherent healing mechanisms.

Similar to chiropractic care, it aims to enhance the communication signals in the body so it can manufacture and repair what it needs to.

Together, growth factors, cytokines, collagens, and peptides, along with stem cells, help regenerative medicine leverage the body’s capacity to heal. From joint degeneration to hair loss, it offers a promising alternative to invasive procedures.

This journey towards health should and can be guided by a commitment to well-being rather than to short-term fixes.

How Do Our Patients Feel About Us
  • "I’ve been coming here for a few months to help with my back pain. They have helped my physical health but also my mental health. It’s so nice to do some scheduled self care each week. The doctors and front desk staff are all so sweet and so welcoming. When you come in you can always expect a big smile and hello from Ann."

  • "First and foremost Dr John is the best human! I’ve gone through numerous different chiropractor practices and could not speak more highly about the service and care that I’ve received from Advanced Spinal Care. They’ve made treatment affordable and comprehensive. I’ve also had difficulty with being adjusted in a beneficial way in the past, but I don’t feel that way going to Advanced Spinal Care. No matter which team member I see I know I’m in good hands and I leave feeling better than before (which is huge for me). I definitely recommend their services for chiropractic care and physical therapy."

The front staff are a wonderful bunch that is always happy to greet you and can get you on the schedule in a snap! This Team has had me pain free for quite awhile now. Such an amazing feeling it is.5 STARS and hats off to the whole office. Would recommend them 24/7!"
